One Day at a Time
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Matthew 6:34.
Have you ever watched a person in constant rush mode? They are always anxious, unsettled and out right unhinged. Their thought process is bombard with getting to the next step as quick as possible. As a former Trainer for DCPS, I recall a training about time management facilitated by Dr. Stephen Covey. He discussed four quadrants or modes of productive living: things we do usually fall into four different categories (1) urgent and important- crises and pressing problems, (2) not urgent but important- relationships, planning and new opportunities, (3) urgent but not important – daily interruptions, calls and meetings and lastly (4) not urgent and not important – trivial task, time wasters and pleasant activities.
thierIn life we all experience being in all four quadrants at some time; but the goal is to devote most of our time and activities around quadrant #2, the things that are not urgent. but important. The person who is in constant rush mode, obviously spends most of their lives in quadrant #1, where everything must be done right now-running around like the house is on fire- this brings stress, burnout, and the constant act of putting out those fires; but this should not be the life of the child of God. Scripture admonishes us “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” Psalm 90:12.
As born-again believers, we have the Holy Spirit to guide and lead us in all that we do. Those anxious, fearful, and unsure attitudes are a plow of the enemy- we walk by faith and not by sight… we do not need to rush to make things happen, or stress about the outcomes; our steps are ordered by the Lord…we just need to do our part-that is to listen and faithfully follow where He leads. “He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.” Proverbs 16:20.
The bible specifically tells us to in Matthew 6:34 “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” We should not be worried and anxious about what tomorrow holds; but live this day to it is fullest seeking to fulfill our God given purpose.
Absolutely nothing happens without the foreknowledge and divine providence of God. “Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.” Romans 8:30. It’s already done, my friends-so, this day…instead of rushing to get to the next moment, next activity or pressing problem, stop and seek God in prayer, trust is His promises, take one day at a time and wait patiently on the Lord. “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31.
One day at a time, sweet Jesus
That’s all I’m asking from You
Just give me the strength to do everyday
What I have to do
Yesterday’s gone, sweet Jesus
And tomorrow may never be mine
Lord, help me today, show me the way
One day at a time
God’s peace and amazing grace be with us all!
