Being Confident in God

Being Confident in God

In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.” Proverbs 14:26.

Confidence means reliance on something or someone proven and faithful. While daily life calls for small acts of trust, in times of true trouble, only trust in our sovereign and Almighty God stands firm. “In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.” Proverbs 14:26.

The twenty-seventh Psalm is attributed to King David. It is written during a troublesome time in his life, but it is a song of confidence and deliverance…God was David’s light and salvation, the true source of His confidence. “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1.

I imagine David reflecting as he wrote, “When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.” (Psalm 27:2). At that moment, he likely recalled facing Goliath, who had threatened to feed David’s flesh to the birds: “And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.” (1 Samuel 17:44). Yet, God delivered the giant into the hands of the shepherd boy that day.

David goes on to express his confidence in verse three like this: “Though a host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.Psalm 27:3. His faith was battle-tested and proven in God!

Even if a host—an overwhelming group—seems against us, we can stand confident in God’s power, presence, and faithfulness. “For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.” Psalm 27:5. God is our safe place; we can depend on Him!

My friends, is anything too hard for God-when we have encountered numerous battles on this journey of life… we too can testify of a battled tested and proven faith in the Lord: “And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord” Psalm 27:6.

Let not your heart be troubled. Place your confidence in God. He is the lover, keeper, and defender of our souls—no matter what we face: sickness, pain, disappointment, or loss. Through it all, we can hold to God’s unchanging hand—He will come through! “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” Psalm 27:14.

God’s blessings of peace, strength, and joy to all.
