Be Still, My Soul!
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10
The Church—the body of born-again believers—has great assurance in the sovereignty and omnipotence of God. We can stand still, worship, and trust Him in all things. His beloved children continue to experience the manifestation of His glory, His amazing grace, and His unconditional love in every generation.
The 46th Psalm opens by reminding us that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. We can rely on His divine protection and provision now and forever. Therefore, we can face every tomorrow trusting in His divine purpose for us all.
Verse ten of Psalm 46 recounts the Lord giving a direct command to the Israelites in the face of fear and imminent danger: “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10. Stillness is the absence of movement, action, or motion; this immediately takes my thoughts to the still waters that David used in Psalm 23:2 as an analogy for where the Lord leads His sheep: “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.”
God knows where to lead us, my friends. The waters of life are sometimes choppy and rough, appear unsafe, and often contain dangerous predators lying in the undertow (the enemy of our souls). But my friends, the Lord leads us beside the still water, where there are no obstructions, friction, or turbulence; providing a safe environment to rest, drink, and trust in His divine care! “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6.
Is God commanding you to be still today? Stop, listen, and obey; we can rest in the assurance of His sovereignty and love, knowing that regardless of the threat or unrest to our souls, the One who calms the raging seas, that Great Shepherd of the sheep… has us safe in His everlasting arms!
Wherever you are on this journey of life, take the step today—be still and know that He is God. Commit to trust Him fully and let His peace guide your heart and mind.
May God’s blessings and peace be with you.
