A Servant of God
“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45.
A servant is one who performs duties for a master or employer. For every born-again believer, an important question arises: Whose am I? If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, the answer is clear—you are a servant of the Most High God, the Lord God Almighty! As Ephesians 2:10 states, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
We have been recreated by God’s miraculous power into a “new” man through Jesus Christ our Lord. Our lives have changed from the old nature that opposes God’s love. Now, we are born again, set aside as His vessels, and given a divine mission. This change is meant to help us glorify Him with good conversations and perseverance in holiness. In doing so, we lead others to His marvelous light. “Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.” Romans 14:19.
So exactly what does our “good conversations” mean? A careful study of the word “conversation” in the KJV Bible shows that it refers to our conduct or behavior. We have been made alive in Christ, and as His servants, we must carefully consider how we walk this journey of life. “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:” Ephesians 2:1-2.
Given this calling, our lives should be examples to this dark world, an ever-bright shining light of hope. We choose daily to walk in the calling God has given us. Let us be careful to avoid unnecessary circumstances that do not contribute to the salvation and uplifting of others. As a reminder, Ephesians 5:8 tells us, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”Remember that someone is always watching how you walk as a Christian. Does your walk-and-talk say anything about whose servant you are?
Only by God’s amazing grace and the power of the Holy Spirit can we become worthy vessels of honor in His sight. As Paul admonished Timothy: “But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.” 2 Timothy 20-21
Stephen Covey wrote, “People are supposed to serve. Life is a mission, not a career.” As servants of God, let us pray to remain true to our mission. Commit ourselves to seeking God’s will for our lives, searching the scriptures for truth, and above all, humbly serving others.
Finally, let us be about our Master’s business, following the example of our Savior! “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
May God bless you and keep you always.
