“Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord’s thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.” Deuteronomy 10:14.

How often do we make plans for ourselves, our families, and others, hoping for certain things in the future, especially after working hard to achieve them? If we’re honest, we do this all the time. But the truth is, we don’t truly own anything—not even ourselves. Deuteronomy 10:14 says, “Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord’s thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.”

As a result of our own planning, we often suffer grave consequences, much heartache, and disappointment when things don’t turn out as we hoped. What makes this happen? The problem arises when we do not first consult God for His will in our lives or in the lives of our loved ones. The truth is only God knows what is best for us and holds the future in His all-powerful hands.

Consider Jesus’ parable of a certain rich man whose field brought in a great yield. “And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?” Luke 12:18-20. He had no earthly idea that his soul would be required to go back to God that very night. If he had known, would he have considered blessing others with his increase- or even first asking God what to do with it?

Seeking a closer walk with the Lord teaches us to reverence, honor, and give Him the glory for all things. We learn to consult Him first for direction and wisdom in every decision that we make in life. Psalm 119:133 states, “Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” God has divine providence over all things. Let us learn to pray for His guidance and settle it in our hearts that if it is the Lord’s will, I will go there or do that. 

My friends, when we let God lead the way before us, we experience innumerable spiritual blessings, such as His goodness, peace, joy, mercy, and unconditional love. May He give us the strength to remain steadfast in prayer, remembering that He knows what’s best!. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13.

Note that scripture validates exactly how we are to respond about the future… “Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” James 4:15.

We can trust our unknown future to our Great and Almighty God. He will faithfully direct our paths in the way that we should go-let us resolve to let go and let Him lead the way! “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6.
