A Balm in Gilead

A Balm in Gilead

“Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?” Jeremiah 8:22.

Weakness can be defined with such words as ineptitude, frailty, sickness, tired, deficiency, imperfection, and many other synonyms to express the inability to have strength in a physical, spiritual, or mental state. It is inevitable that at some point in our lives we will experience weakness on varying levels… and some I dare say seems overwhelming. This appears to be a dismal state for the human condition…but I am here to tell you that there is a balm in Gilead or healing agent for the sin sick and weakened soul!

Jeremiah chapter eight and verse twenty-two gives us an account of a balm used to grow in Israel for the healing of the nations. The prophet posed the question as to why God’s children had no spiritual healing…using the analogy of a place where so much medicine was in ample supply “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?”

Praise God that over two thousand years ago and right now today, whatever state we may find ourselves, even at the weakest, the precious blood of Jesus is that balm that is able to heal, provide, and deliver not only as it was then in Gilead, but for the salvation of the whole world; and it will never lose its power!

When we find ourselves unable to find the strength and sinew to carry on…and yes, it happens, we can call on the Great Physician, the One who heals to the utmost…regardless to physical, mental, or spiritual circumstances…His love and compassion is everlasting, and His promises will never fail.

Let us cling to the fact that when we can go no further…Isaiah 40:31 gives comfort, light and hope to our hearts. “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” He will succor and keep us forever!

Praise God, we can rest in His unfailing peace and depend on His faithfulness to carry us through this journey of life, providing and strengthening us to run our race in victory…hold to His unchanging hands and keep the faith, all is well!

God blessings, peace, and strength be with us all now and forever!

There is a balm in Gilead

To make the wounded whole;

There is a balm in Gilead

To heal the sin-sick soul.
