Charity Begins at Home

Charity Begins at Home

“But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” 1 Timothy 5:8.

We have heard the old proverb numerous times “Charity begins at home and spreads abroad” many believe that it is a verse from the bible. However, it is not; but the expression denotes the care and concern for an individual’s own family before others. It may not be biblical, but the thought certainly is…1 Timothy 5:8 state: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”

Charity is love, the greatest two commandments tell us to first love God and then our neighbor. Timothy was exhorting the Christians to love not only others but to first take care of home, especially speaking of the widows; home does not always denote the same household…but a relational bond, whether physical or spiritual.

Have you ever seen those who appear to be so loving and caring to everyone else except their own family? They give kindness, finances, deep care, and concern or whatever appears to be needed to others and are totally different people when it comes to those closest to their hearts; this should not be…our love is manifested in our works, the apostle James stated that faith without works is dead. “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:3.

The Word of the Lord, in the book of 1 Timothy is saying to neglect the needs of our loved ones is not true Christianity. Our lives should be lived out in faith and love in all that we do, especially when it comes to giving to others. Selflessness is to care and go beyond the comforts of self to help with the welfare of another. Christ died for us on the cross, what is it that we cannot give up for another in a time of true need?

An infidel is basically and unbeliever. The world, unbelievers are watching…what will they say about our walk when it comes to charity and our own families? A Christian should never be inferior to an unbeliever in respect to any virtue; we should surpass their actions and deeds in love.

God has so graciously provided for all that we need and gives us the ability to spread His many blessings to others. Does our charity truly begin at home … with those dearest to our heart and then reach out to others? “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.” John 15:12.

Never forget, that we may deceive the whole world with actions and deeds that look good…but God knows the heart of every man and to Him we will all give an account one day; let us check ourselves and strive to live in truth and love following His commands now and forever.

God blessings and peace be with us all.
