Give Us This Day

Give Us This Day

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.;” Matthew 6:34.

Everything that we need is lovingly provided by God. The scripture teaches us to ask. Even though God knows exactly what we need, there is a lesson in it for us to put our dependence in God; it humbles and reminds us that He is our omnipotent Lord.

In the Lords’ Prayer we find six different petitions. The first three places our focus on God alone and His sovereignty; it speaks of His glory, kingdom and will. The last three speaks of those things that we need and that bring comfort into our lives. Therefore, we are admonished to come boldly before the throne of grace and ask for what we need as stated in Matthew 6:11 “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Why not ask for a week’s supply of bread- only receiving provisions for one day forces us to place our dependence in our divine supplier; let us remember the account of the Israelites when God rained down manna from heaven for them to eat. Exodus 16:12 “I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.” Exodus 16:12.

They were given specific directions on how much to take and consume. When they followed God directions, each man had exactly what was needed proportionately for him and his family. They were specifically instructed to take only what they needed for the day, but some out of disobedience tried to store up more than a days’ portion, and consequently the worms ate it up by morning. God desires that we trust in His faithfulness; He will never fail to provide!

When we trust in Him, we will never lack anything that we need. Psalm 37:25 states “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” Just as the Israelites, we are to obediently follow His commands. He will take care of us from now throughout eternity.

Are you depending on God to ensure that you have all that you need? I can attest that God is faithful; He has always and will continue to provide for His children; His love is unconditional, and we can depend on Him!

So, today, go before Him asking for what you need… He will provide. “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Matthew 6:34.

Blessings and peace for a great day in the Lord.
