“And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.” 2 Samuel 9:3

It is insignificant as to how much bible we know, if we do not know much about the grace of God. King David’s kindness to his sworn friend Jonathan’s crippled son Mephibosheth, teaches us of God’s amazing grace towards us all.

In the book of I Samuel we find that Jonathan and David made a covenant. 1 Samuel 20:15 state: “But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.”

The bible tells us that when Jonathan and King Saul were killed in Jezreel; that the nurse of Mephibosheth, took him and ran; and in the midst he fell and became lame. Therefore, he was raised in a placed called Lodebar; this was a barren land with no pasture, fruitless and out right despicable. The child was born of royal descent but raise as an indigent.

In chapter 8 during the transition from Saul’s rule to David’s reign as King, David enjoys a season of prosperity. Seasons of adversity and prosperity will readily show the character or heart of a person. David was not in lack of anything at the time and was looking for something; it is then that he recalls the promise made with Jonathan and was determined to keep it; therefore, he inquires if there are any left in the house of Saul.

A servant from the house of Saul was found and sent to David. He replied to David in chapter 9:3: “And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.” Notice how the servant, did not call him be name, but pointed out the obvious and negative…he was lame on his feet, as if to say, he is not worth your time. This is what the enemy does in our lives; points out our weaknesses; but we are a priceless treasure to God!

King David sent for Mephibosheth to be brought up out of Lodebar. 2 Samuel 9:7 “And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.” David’s kindness removed all Mephibosheth’s fears, and he was treated as one of David’s on sons, he would sit at the Kings table forever!

This is an amazing analogy of what Jesus does for us…we were all exiled in a barren land like unto Lodebar called sin; but by God’s amazing grace, He welcomes us, and lifts us out of our fallen state.

Mephibosheth was lame on his feet; but all his weaknesses were hidden under the King’s table; this is what happens when we become saved…grace has us covered and gives us undeserved riches! Ephesians 1:3 states: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:”

My friends, we do not have to remain in the barren places in our lives…whatever your lameness may be today; do not let the lies of the enemy keep you down; Come up out of Lodebar; you are a child of the most High God who will provide all that you need; and best of all, you get to sit at the King of Kings table forever!
