Drawing Near to God

Drawing Near to God

“But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.” Psalm 73:28

We all have to be brutally honest with ourselves sometimes; especially in times when we witness the inequalities and ill treatment of so many in our world. Even as Christians it will cross our minds, why does the wicked appear to prosper and do so well oppose to many of God’s children.

In those few and far in between times of weakness we can turn to Psalm 73 and look at the prophet Asaph who gives an eye-opening account of his despondency to see the prosperity of the wicked. He clearly paints a picture of how it appears when the wicked seems to triumph in this life. They possess wealth to afford the best of what seems like a successful living.

This seemed bleak to Asaph because the faithful and God-fearing man appeared to struggle with even the basic necessities of life while being taken advantage of by the wealthy. Above all these things the wicked even blasphemed God as though He did not exist. He wondered about his faithfulness and commitment to following God’s commands and his thoughts were too painful for him.

But then at that moment something wonderful happened to him; in Psalm 73:17 he writes “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.” Not until he refocused his thoughts and drew near to God could he spiritually see the truth of it all. The unjust were only prospering for a season. “I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.” Psalm 37:35.

He was able to view their current circumstances in comparison to eternity. They seem to have the best that life could offer in this world but would lose in the end and forfeit eternal life. “For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.” Therefore, he wrote in Psalm 73:28 “But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.” He resolved to trust in the omnipotence and faithfulness of God and His goodness.

My friends, in times like these let us as Asaph concluded; faithfully draw near to God. We too can trust in His omnipotence and faithfulness to protect, provide, and keep us forever. His divine plans will come to fruition. We only have a partial view of what will be, 1 Corinthians 13:12 tells us “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”

God’s amazing grace is unfailing towards those who love Him. The light afflictions that we face in this life are only working for our good and far greater riches in heaven. “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Romans 5:3-5.

We must remain faithful and steadfast to our calling; God manifests His glory in our weak vessels that the world will know that He is God. “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” Let us never cease to witness of God’s amazing grace and loving-kindness to all those who will listen!

God blessings of mercy, peace and love keep, sustain, and empower us now and forever.
