Heavenly Salt

Heavenly Salt

“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” Matthew 5:13.

Salt has a number of important purposes. This was especially so in the time of Christ when synthetic alternatives and refrigeration were unavailable. One use for salt is to add flavour to food while another important use is for preservation – preventing the putrefaction and spoiling of food.

Christ’s Sermon on the Mount, has a direct message for all those who believe in His name… the instructions still stands for us today… be the spiriitual salt of the earth that we are now through Him.  It teaches us that the presence of true, spiritual believers can make a real difference to this lost and dying world. “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” Matthew 5:13.

My friends, the Holy Spirit seasons the lives of God’s beloved children with “Heavenly salt.” Salt is odorless but has a strong taste; it is also Hygroscopic – which is the ability of a substance to attract and hold water molecules from it’s surroundings. Just like salt, as Christians we should seek to be odorless, not overbearing, humble, yet strong to the taste by speaking the truth, things that are praiseworthy, meaningful and encouraging-attracting others to the light of our Christ and His faithfulness.

We are to present our bodies as living sacrifices that are acceptable unto God; Romans 12:1  states: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

Our acceptance to the call of salvation is an irreversible commitment between us and God; we were not saved to sit…but are His ambassadors to this dying world-the salt of the earth; “Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.” Mark 9:50.

The scripture admonishes us to “Have salt in yourselves,” it’s all about us embracing the new life that we now possess as dear children of God…being assured of His love that dwells within us, and expressing that love to others in our actions, thoughts and speech-being humble and submissive to the leading of our Savior.  Colossians 3:12 states: “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;” Just like salt, our lives should be a healthful, purifying influence on others.

Ultimately, let us maintain peace as much as possible with all men. People know us by our conduct and speech, our character- we must all ask ourselves the questions-how does my life speak to this dark and dying world? John 13:35 reminds us that: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

So, add a little heaven salt to someone’s life today; encouraging, uplifting, and leading them to the true light . . . beccause you are the salt of the earth! Remember as the old spiritual hymn states- “They will know that we are Christians by our love!

God blessings and peace to all.
