Heavenly Salt
“Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.” Mark 9:50.
Salt has a number of important purposes. This was especially true in the time of Christ when synthetic alternatives and refrigeration were unavailable and salt was the main source used for preservation – preventing the putrefaction and spoiling of food. Salt, when used in just the right preportions, adds a delectable taste to the palate and if you’ve ever experienced a sore throat…salt and hot water is a great healing agent. The surrendered and obedient life of a born-again believer can certainly be associated as Heavenly salt. “Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.” Mark 9:50.
The audience for Christ’s Sermon on the Mount, was not the lost sheep of the house of Israel, but His own, chosen disciples. Christ’s instruction to be salt was given to those that believed in His name – and the important lesson it teaches is that the presence of true, spiritual believers can make a real difference to a lost and dying world. ourdailyverse.com
My friends, the Holy Spirit seasons the lives of God’s beloved children with “Heavenly salt.” Salt is odorless but has a strong taste; it is also Hygroscopic – which is the ability of a substance to attract and hold water molecules from it’s surroundings. Just like salt, as Christian we should pray to be odorless, not overbearing, but humble, yet strong to the taste by speaking the truth, things that are praiseworthy, meaningful and encouraging-attracting others to the light of our Christ and His faithfulness.
Our acceptance to the call of salvation is an irreversible commitment between us and God; we are His ambassadors to this lost and dying world. We referenceing all born-again believers, are called to be the salt of the earth; “Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.” Mark 9:50. Our lives should exert a spiritually healthy, purifying influence on others.
May God give us the grace and strength to be powerful forces in this dark world. It is imperative that we watch out for those things that can so easily trip us up and render our witnesses as non-effective for the Lord. When the scripture admonishes us to “Have salt in yourselves,” It is a call to walk circumspectly – making a conscious effort to align our lives with God’s will, avoiding sin, and resisting the influence of worldly temptations.
Our character, speech, thoughts and actions should be a manifestation of God’s power that lives within us. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”Colossians 3;16.
Ultimately, maintain peace as much as possible with all men, taking the personal responsibility in pursuing peace and not the cause of conflict. Yes, our character defines who we are- we must all ask ourselves the question-what does our life speak to the world? John 13:35 reminds us that: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
Season someone’s life with a little Heavenly Salt today . . . choose to make a difference by the love of Christ that shines through you. Remember as the old spiritual hymn states- They will know that we are Christians by our love!
God blessings and peace to all.
