Peace, Be Still!

Peace, Be Still!

“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” Mark 4:39.

The angry waves were tossing the small ship; there appeared to be no way out of the immense storm, certainly they would drown; the disciples ran to Jesus for help “And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?” Mark 4:38.

I can remember hearing the old gospel song “Peace, Be Still!” sung by the late James Cleveland.  “Master, the tempest is raging, oh, the billows are tossing in high. The sky is all shadow with blackness, oh no shelter or hope is nigh. Carriest thou not that we perish…oh, how can thou lie asleep? It seems like each moment is threatening, oh, a grave in the angry deep, get up, Jesus! Because the winds and the waves shall obey thy will, Peace, Be Still!  Yes, my friends, whatever, all Jesus has to say is “Peace, be still!” and all will sweetly obey His will!

Are you in a place at this moment in your life where you need to call on Jesus, where every moment threatens your total existence, and you need to plead…get up, Jesus?! The Master of all Heaven and Earth is never out of our reach…whatever the cares and concerns of your heart at this very moment…put it in the hands of Jesus! “Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee”. Jeremiah 32:17.

Let these comforting words bring rest to your soul: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”Psalm 46:1. My friends, Jesus is the One who completely comforts our brokenness, loss, and any other immense circumstance that appears to pull us into despair. All things do and will obey His command. His sweet peace is never out of reach. We only need to call Him, and He will answer! “Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.” Jeremiah 29:12.

Note that when the disciples cried out to Jesus in Mark 4:39, He immediately acted, providing all that their fearful hearts needed: “And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” Mark 4:39.

When Jesus is on board in our lives, even in the darkest of moments…He ushers in the peace that we need. His word tells us that “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7.

God loves us and will reach us wherever we are in life. “A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.” Isaiah 42:3. His grace is sufficient for all that we need. You can call Him early in the wee hours of the morning or late at the midnight hour; fall on your knees, and He will tenderly give you His sweet peace to comfort your soul, and my friend, when He says, Peace, Be Still! It is well.

God’s blessings of comfort, strength, and peace be with you now and forever.
