Spiritual Worship

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23

Worship is defined as the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for God. It is an essential and humbling act that allows us to show forth our praise and honor to our Creator.  Individuals worship in different ways . . . some may cry, shout, dance or just simply close their eyes to meditate and silently moan to the glory of God. Regardless to how and where we worship the Lord, it must be a wholehearted offering of our total praise. God sees and knows the heart of every man. Therefore, He knows the sincerity of our worship.

The Samaritan woman in John 4:7 had an encounter at the well with Jesus, “There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.”  She was well versed in her forefather’s religion. They worshipped God at Mount Gerizim opposed to the Jews who worshipped at Jerusalem.

The Samaritans were a mixture of Jews and the heathen nations in the surrounding area; they believed that they served the original religion of the Jews. This was a source of contention and separated the Jews from the Samaritans “Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.” John 4:23.

Unfortunately, she was spiritually ignorant of the full truth.” Which is that “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24.

That day at the well the woman had a life changing spiritual encounter with the Lord. He asked her for a drink of water, but she was on the receiving end and was filled with life giving water from above! Every born-again believer has also received from the life-giving water that only Jesus can give. And just like the woman who in haste ran to tell of a man who had told her all things . . . “The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” John 4:29. We too are unable to contain our praise and worship for our Almighty God.

God is seeking wholeheartedly worshippers. The Apostle Paul also reinforced the fact that we must worship God with our entire being; in his sermon on Mars Hill to the Athens he state “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;” Acts 17: 24-25.

The place is in the heart…we come together as Jesus has admonished us in our sanctuaries to worship Him in unity; but the baptism of the Holy Ghost takes place miraculously in our hearts at the moment of salvation. It is there . . . in the heart that we truly connect with our Heavenly Father. He made our souls to live eternally; and out of the issues of our heart, deep down in our souls… we spiritually worship our invisible God!

The present time has certainly forced us to recognize that true worship is a spiritual encounter between each individual and God. He alone is worthy and accepts our reverence because Jesus paid it all one day on Calvary’s Cross and rose from the dead the third day morning! Hallelujah, by faith and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we can worship Him in Spirit and in truth.

Jesus is soon to return; He’s coming back for a spiritual Church where He alone is the head. Will you be there? Every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord… and as the old spiritual goes, Get right Church, and Let’s go home!

God help us to worship Him with our entire mind, body, and soul.

Blessings of peace, and joy be with us all!
