Tender-Mercies

Tender-Mercies

“A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.” Matthew 12:20.

Tender defined as showing gentleness, and concern. During times of emotional, physical, or spiritual brokenness, we all need someone to show a little tenderness and care-the truth is we never know exactly the state of mind of another…so it behooves us to treat all men with compassion and love. “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:32.

Every born-again believer has the assurance that the Master of our souls…is compassionate, gentle, and loving towards all His beloved children; and just when we are at that breaking point…Scripture reminds us “A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.” Matthew 12:20.

The prophet Isaiah described the character of our Lord, Jesus Christ as the One with extreme gentleness. In Matthew 12:20, the “bruised reed” is the type of someone’s brokenness caused by the weight or cares of this world, sin, or even rejection; but our Lord and Savior seeks to bind our cares and strengthen us in our weakness; the “smoking flax” is the wick of the lamp which has ceased to burn clearly, and the clouded flame that can scarcely burn…ready for extinction-but Jesus is the light of the world and provides our light in the darkest of times-He succors or hides us in the safety of His arms.

My friends, if by chance you need a little tenderness this day and you cannot seem to see your way clearly… Jesus is calling “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28. At the foot of the cross we find His tender-mercies and rest for our weary souls!

God’s blessings of peace and mercy be with us all.
