Every Good Gift Comes from Above
Every Good Gift Comes from Above
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17).
What does it mean for something to be good? In the Book of James, he speaks to Christian believers enduring trials and temptations. But in Scripture, He draws our attention to the only one who is good, God, by whom all things exist, and therefore He is the giver of every good and perfect gift, and not human effort or sheer luck, as some may think. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning .”(James 1:17).
All of the many blessings that sustain our lives, grant us His amazing grace, provide our daily provision, wisdom, peace, or answered prayer- my friend- are evidence that they all come from God above, and surpass the trials and tribulations that we encounter in life!
Yet, James also points us to far greater gifts that he calls perfect, meaning things or spiritual realities that are complete in Christ and eternal, such as our salvation, redemption, and His truth, which has brought us nigh unto God!
For those of us who are born-again believers, these perfect gifts give us reason to praise God, way down deep in the soul, right in the midst of our troubles, because we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, who is our constant companion and keeper until the day of redemption. It is through Him and His power that lives within us that we have the gift of joy, peace, and love abiding in and through every circumstance in life. “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Psalm 16:11).
Remembering this should remind us all just how truly good God is, and in fact, His unfailing love and mercy are refreshed each morning in our hearts! ‘It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” (lamentations 3:22-23).
So, Let’s praise and give honor to God for all His goodness and mercy towards us, every single day that He gives us breath, for He is our All-Sufficient One, the very lover of our souls-to Him be the glory now and forever! “Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!” (Psalm 31:19).
May the peace and grace of God be with you all!
