“For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”  Psalm 30:5.

Trials, tribulations, and afflictions are experienced by us all at some juncture in our lives. In Psalms, David often wrote of his afflictions and trials facing the enemy, but through it all he extolled God for His healing and deliverance. Psalm 34:19 assures us that “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”

In the 30th Psalm, which is attributed to David, some commentators assumed that David had just recovered from a critical illness. The entire psalm speaks of his unceasing thanksgiving and praise to our Almighty Healer!  

No matter whether David faced physical, spiritual, or mental challenges, he chose to trust and bless God in the midst of it all!  “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;” Psalm 103:2-3.

So, just as David sings this Psalm of praise and thanksgiving for his healing and deliverance, we must also raise our voices in praise for the innumerable physical as well as spiritual victories won in our own lives. 

Let us learn to witness to God’s goodness and sustaining power through every valley experience and the tearing down of strongholds; for it is only by His amazing grace that we stand. An old gospel hymn resonates in my heart with these comforting words: Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come: ’tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.

I bring to mind another faithful witness. The Apostle Paul wrote: “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:10.

Psalm 30:5 brings much comfort, hope, and above all joy to our hearts; “For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”  

This verse gives us parallels between God’s anger and life; His anger only lasts for a brief moment, but His love and His favor will endure forever. Our weeping, our trials and tribulations will endure as it appears as the darkness of night, but joy, God’s great joy, will come early in the morning!

My friends, the joy of the Lord is not a feeling of happiness that lasts momentarily. But it floods the soul of every beloved child of God, giving peace and comfort of His amazing grace now and forever. 

In the concluding verse of the 30th Psalm, David resolves to express his praise and thanks to God forever. “To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.” Psalm 30:12.

Let us forever give God the glory, resting in the assurance that we are victorious no matter what our present circumstances may look like; joy is promised and God will deliver. Our weeping may endure for the night, but God is faithful to His promises, and joy will come in the morning!
