Mothers, Fruitbears for God

Mothers, Fruitbears for God

“Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.” Matthew 12:33.

Today is Mother’s Day, a special time to give thanks, show love, and appreciate our mothers. For those whose mothers are now with the Lord, we hold on to precious memories and thank God for the time we shared with them. Even when we feel the sadness of loss, we remain grateful for the blessing of having a godly mother who prayed for us, cared for us, loved us, and guided us to honor God.

My friends, motherhood is a divine calling. The blessing is that God equips those whom He calls.  God lovingly provides everything needed to nurture and raise godly children. We also know that there are many women who have never given birth to a child but have likewise been called to teach wisdom, kindness, and the love of God to the precious souls entrusted to our care.

The word of the Lord expresses this truth about a godly mother: “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” Proverbs 31:26-28.

For more than forty years as a mother, I have prayed this simple prayer to our loving Heavenly Father: “Lord, help me to raise my child in the fear and the knowledge of you, according to your will, and bless Him with your peace, favor, and love all the days of his life.” Now, I am grateful to see God’s goodness in the lives of my son, my daughter-in-law, and even their children. God truly is faithful!

Being a praying mother is not always easy. You have to ask yourself tough questions. What kind of example am I setting? Do I want my children to love and respect the Lord, and to pray with humble hearts? When I make mistakes, do my actions still show God’s presence in my life? Do I pray with my children and bring them to church to worship and honor God? Children learn from what they see. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6.

The word admonishes us that a tree is known by the fruit that it bears- “Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.” Matthew 12:33.

Mothers, then, are fruitbears for God, meaning that we help produce godly qualities in their lives. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23.

This holy fruit is what molds and makes our children into faithful, loving women and men of God, meet for His use and glory. Never forget that you have been called by God, entrusted with His precious jewels; you are molders of hearts and minds- let Christ dwell in you richly and watch how the fruit of the Spirit flourishes in your children for the goodness of God!

God’s blessings and Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers!
