The Window of Hope

The Window of Hope

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.” (KJV Psalm 121:1)

In the Bible, windows often symbolize revelation, insight, and the presence of God. They represent openings that allow light and truth to enter, symbolizing spiritual illumination and divine guidance. Psalm 121 offers a window of hope to our souls: “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. David intentionally looks beyond his earthly surroundings and lifts his eyes towards God. It was a conscious decision to turn away from despair and cling to his hope in the sovereignty of Almighty God! What are you seeing outside of your window of life today, and where does your hope lie?

I recall a story entitled “The Window.” Two men shared a hospital room. Over time, they shared stories about family, friends, hopes, dreams, and their illnesses. The man closest to the window needed the nurse’s help to sit up each day due to a lung condition. He would look out and happily tell the other man what he saw. He described a father and son playing ball, gardeners tending the lawn, beautiful flowers, and lovers walking hand in hand in the sunshine. This continued for some time. One day, the other man became envious and wondered why he couldn’t have the bed by the window. One night, the man with the lung condition coughed and struggled to breathe. The other man ignored him and did not press the help button. He listened until the man’s struggles ceased. When the bed by the window was empty, he quickly asked to move there. His request was granted. Eagerly, he looked out, but to his surprise, there was only a brick wall.

We all must endure the struggles and tough situations that come in life.  Yet those of us who place our hope in God can rest in the assurance that He is the All-Sufficient One. He is our present help in the time of trouble- always providing the grace, strength, and peace that we need to walk this tedious journey. Job expressed the journey that we walk like this: “Man that is born of a woman Is of few days, and full of trouble.” Job 14:1.

The comforting admonition of the Psalmist to himself, in Psalm 42:11, offers us these words of hope in God: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”  Like the pslamist, and the first fellow by the window, we make the choice every day to live in the faith, hope, and peace that we have in God- confident that brighter things are ahead!

“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9.

My friends, faith in the unlimited power of God and His unconditional love for us, gives us confidence to face the hurt, pain, and troubles of this life. We can cling to the truth that there is nothing impossible with God. The road may be dark and the hills insurmountable to climb, but have hope in God! “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1.

May God’s strength, peace, and unfailing love be with you all!
