God’s Great Joy!
“For the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10b.
“Don’t worry, be happy” was a popular song some years ago. I believe its message was to remain happy regardless of life’s circumstances. However, this perspective is not always realistic. Happiness is a positive emotional state, but our emotions fluctuate in response to life events. One moment we may feel happy, and the next, we may experience deep sadness.
As born-again believers, we possess something far greater than “happy feelings” to sustain and keep us during the rises and falls of life’s circumstances. The gift of Joy is not dependent on our emotions or mental state. Joy comes from the fruit developed in us by the Holy Spirit and is based on our relationship with Christ, our Savior. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:24-25.
The Apostle Paul exemplified how God’s joy sustained him in the toughest of circumstances. He wrote the entire book of Philippians and several of his other epistles while imprisoned. Only by the amazing grace of God’s great joyand sustaining power could he write words of hope, strength, and comfort from the walls of a dungeon!
Consider the difficult conditions that Paul endured, being imprisoned and constantly aware that death would be imminent. Yet, he persevered as “the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles.” Ephesians 3:1a.
God used Paul’s faithful preaching to encourage believers in his time and to still inspire us today. “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” Philippians 4:4.
My friends, it is God’s grace and power that guide us safely through life. He dwells within all His beloved children, teaching, comforting, guiding, protecting, strengthening, and granting us His great joy. As Nehemiah 8:10b states: “For the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
God’s great joy imparts a profound peace within our souls that surpasses all understanding. His power uplifts us and assures us of our belonging to Him, affirming that nothing can sever this bond.
Let us find comfort, peace, and hope in the words of Romans 8:39: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Joy, joy, God’s great joy
Joy, joy
Down in my soul
Sweet, beautiful, soul-saving joy
Oh joy, joy in my soul!
God’s Great Joy!
God’s peace and joy to all!
